Methadone and mental disorders

A study with 600 patients in Catalonia analysed whether those with psychiatric disorders used more substances. The result was good news: there was no more use of opioids, cocaine or alcohol. The only exception was cannabis, which is more common in people with dual diagnoses. Even so, comprehensive programmes, psychotropic drugs and methadone could be protecting against relapses into other drugs. Conclusion: good methadone treatment reduces much of the risk… but you have to be careful with substances such as cannabis.
