The study looks at how heavy drinking in adolescence can affect memory and the brain in adulthood. In an animal model, the researchers saw that alcohol damages areas of the hippocampus related to learning and memory, altering the activity of certain brain receptors. However, when the animals had previously gone through mild, controlled stress, these negative effects were reduced: the brain showed a partial recovery of its normal functioning. Even so, alcohol continued to affect emotional behavior, indicating that this “protection” is only partial.
