A study in rats found that intermittent alcohol consumption during adolescence weakens certain brain structures called perineuronal networks, which act as a kind of “protective mesh” for neurons in the hippocampus, a key area for memory. This effect was more marked in males, while different changes were observed in females, suggesting that alcohol may affect differently depending on sex.
Taken together, the results indicate that starting to drink too early can make the developing brain more vulnerable.
